Darkside (Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington)

RELEASE DATE: 4/10/2013
LABEL : Other People

Psychic is Darkside’s debut album released October 2013. The group is a collaboration between Nicolas Jaar and guitarist Dave Harrington, who has been part of Nico’s live act since their Space is Only Noise tour in 2011. This is their second release as duo, following their self-titled Darkside EP which came out in 2011 on Nico’s now shutdown Clown & Sunset label.

Psychic takes you on a journey, transcending genres, and never quite able to answer the question, “what am I listening to?”. It is a hybrid between electronica, indie rock, and blues, but somehow keeps an effortless and organic feel throughout the album. It is a deconstruction of sounds into individual elements that are reassembled into an unrecognizable form.

The album opener is the stand out track; running at 11 minutes, “Golden Arrow” displays Nico and Harrington’s impalpable chemistry. With a methodical build up typical of Jaar, the beat drops nearly 5 min into the track, with hints of beautiful strings in the background fading in and out. Harrington’s bluesy guitar seamlessly kicks in as Nico’s vocals build up, ultimately unfolding the track into instrumental excellence. “Golden Arrow” is characteristic of the album as a whole where it is less about it’s definition of genre but about the sounds constantly evolving.

Psychic is a timeless album that is marking a change in the way people listen to music. It can be intriguing to music aficionados while enjoyed by non-enthusiasts at the same time. Not an album to be missed.
